Going Green

Taking our environmental impact very seriously, and always striving to do better

At Elterwater Hostel we take our responsibility to the environment very seriously and are trying our best to be as green as possible. We have been proud holders of the Green Tourism Gold Award since 2017 but are constantly searching for opportunities to improve.

A number of ongoing initiatives include; a rolling programme to replace appliances with new AAA rated versions, lights with LED bulbs and water savings, including encouraging guests to bring their own towels. In recent years we’ve also added an electric car charging point.

Most recently we have committed to replace all duvets and pillows with eco-friendly products using recycled materials.

Guests are invited to contribute to the Lake District Foundation and in particular Fix the Fells (a partnership programme between a number of organisations to repair erosion scars which have developed over the years and to make sure that these scars are prevented in the future).  As a hostel we have also benefited with a grant from the foundation which has contributed towards upgrading our curtains to include thermal linings to reduce heat loss and improve warmth.

We have recently undertaken a waste management review with assistance from ECO-I NW and the University of Cumbria, engaging an intern to help us reduce, and improve our waste management. This will be an ongoing project.
