Rock Climbing

“the birthplace of rock climbing”

Langdale is one of the numerous places that claims to be ‘the birthplace of rock climbing’, and has an abundance of great crags and routes for all abilities. The valley is a major hub for Lakeland climbing.

Ranging from classic diffs such as Middlefell Buttress, to E8 Dawes Rides the Shovelhead and beyond, as well as many three star routes on crags like Scout Crag and Gimmer Crag, classic mountain routes such as Bowfell Buttress and a fair scattering of winter routes should conditions prevail, there’s something for everyone.

Summit Treks and Climb365 are good options for guided climbing, as well as instruction, in the local area. Alternatively, check out Climber Magazine’s suggestions for top routes in the Langdale Valley.
