Wansfell Fell Race
Saturday, 27th December 2025
This race starts at the bottom of Stock Ghyll Lane (behind the Salutation Hotel) GR 337044 and finishes slightly further up the road than this at the layby of Force Cafe (formerly the old Kelsick school). An out-and-back route, this race starts with an unforgiving short, sharp ascent of Stock Ghyll Lane (which is actually a tarmacked road) to the fell gate/stile. A runnable section to a 2nd gate leads onto a thigh-burning section of steep stone steps that head directly upwards. A short section of open fell follows, over rough grass and onwards to the rocky summit. Please follow the flagged route to the summit and then away from the summit. The summit is the only checkpoint and although runners can take their own preferred route, most competitors descend to the R of the main path as you’re looking down the fell, crossing back onto the main path near the bottom.
Although short and sweet this race should not be underestimated. The route is very steep and extremely rough underfoot. Slippery, wet conditions can make the descent treacherous and if the mist is down the ability to navigate is essential. Please also be aware that the road section at the beginning and end will not be closed to cars although it will be marshalled. Runners must take great caution especially when descending at speed and negotiating blind corners.

Langdale Horseshoe Fell Race
Saturday, 10th October 2026
The Langdale Horseshoe is an annual Lake District fell race that starts and finishes at the Old Dungeon Ghyll. The course climbs to Stickle Tarn before heading to Thunacar Knott, Esk Hause shelter, Bowfell, Crinkle Crags and Pike of Blisco. The route is approximately 21 kilometres (13 mi) in length with 1,450 metres (4,760 ft) of ascent.
This race is over a rough, tough course with almost exclusively rocky and slippy ground. The weather in October is rarely ‘pleasant’ and the fells are often clagged in, making navigation difficult on a course with many pathless sections.
If you are at all unsure of your ability to complete the course safely, you should gain more experience and come back another year. Previous experience of similar races will be asked for as part of the entry system: 2 medium or long mountainous (Lakes, Scotland, N Wales) category A fell races in previous 3 years, or similar relevant experience (significant mountain experience). Entry remains at the discretion of race organisers.
