Two runners have joined the results board for the 23 Before Tea challenge from Elterwater Hostel, with two unusual deviations from the route.
Jennifer Parker and Richard Kendall completed the 48k circuit of 23 Wainwright fell tops in a very creditable time of 8:35:05, which included the variation of Jack’s Rake scramble up the face of Pavey Ark…and a drink at the Badger Bar at Rydal.
Jennifer, from Great Sankey in Warrington, was doing the route for the first time, though Richard, from Marple in Greater Manchester, first ran it three years ago and is in 8th place on the leader board.

She said: “This was Richard’s second time around the route and my first, so I could get to know it before I take on more of a competitive attempt and try to limit the chances of getting lost.” And she thanked Antony Moore, manager of the Elterwater Independent Hostel for the traditional tea and cake offered to all completers: “We loved the round, a great day out in the lakes and even a venture up Jack’s Rake for a fun detour. As Richard said, it was a slightly more fun way since we weren’t in a rush. Can’t wait to come back and go round faster – and have another excellent cup of tea.”

The pair also posted photos of their refreshment stop at the Badger Bar, the popular pub run by Ambleside AC’s Paul and Eleanor Knowles.
The 23 summits they ticked off, in order, were: Silver How, Blea Rigg, Pavey Ark, Harrison Stickle, Loft Crag, Pike o’Stickle, Thunacar Knott, High Raise, Sergeant Man, Tarn Crag, Calf Crag, Gibson Knott, Helm Crag, Nab Scar, Heron Pike, Stone Arthur, Great Rigg, Fairfield, Hart Crag, Dove Crag, High Pike, Low Pike, Loughrigg.
