Owner’s Update

Now that the legal restrictions have been lifted and Elterwater Hostel is almost fully open, following its longest closed period in history, we thought you might appreciate a brief update on recent goings on and future plans.

It has been an extremely difficult time for the entire hospitality industry, particularly for those offering shared facilities. The business returned in May 2021 but with restrictions on numbers, allocated showers and social distancing rules in place. Even though restrictions have now been lifted, we remain cautious and are still limiting the number of guests (to roughly 2/3 of full capacity), maintaining social distancing, wearing masks in common areas and continuing with enhanced cleaning procedures.

Summer in the Lake District is busy with many people choosing to stay in the UK rather than venturing abroad.  The hostel aims to continue to provide a low cost option with clean and comfortable facilities, excellent showers and friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff and of course great access to the fells from the front door! Although the shared dorm rooms remain closed we’ve added a great deal of just £44 per night including breakfast for single occupancy in one of our twin rooms.

We’ve made the most of our closure time; we replaced the carpet throughout the bedrooms and hallways and re-set the front steps with newly painted white edges to make them stronger and safer. The cycle shed has been repainted and made more secure for all of you who like to explore the fells by bike. We are also planning new curtains in the bedrooms and a major upgrade to the self catering kitchen to provide more uniform surfaces and a bar stool seating area.

There’s lots going on and we really look forward to seeing as many of you as possible over the coming months.
