Great Outdoors Magazine Award Nomination 2022

We are honoured to be nominated again for the Great Outdoors Magazine Readers’ Awards in the Hostel or Bunkhouse of the Year category. The awards have established a reputation as the ‘UK’s biggest democratic celebration of the people, places and businesses that make our outdoor lives better‘, so it is no mean feat to be included in the shortlist for the third time. We are truly grateful to those of you who have put our name forward.

We are very much hoping to retain, or even improve on, last year’s result, when we won Bronze. Every vote counts, and we’d love you to vote for us – here. Thank you!!

The nomination comes as we approach the 10th anniversary (in 2023) of the formation of Elterwater Independent Hostel Ltd, when the YHA sold off the building, claiming it was no longer viable as a Hostel business, so to be nominated for Best Hostel or Bunkhouse for the third time feels like an achievement in itself.

In those 10 years, we have spent a lot of time and effort improving the fabric of the building, bringing it up to date and making it fit for the modern hosteller, and creating the “home from home” feeling that so many of our guests love.

This homely feeling, that really makes us more than just an affordable place to stay in the Lake District, is really thanks to the hard work and dedication of our team, who make the difference and are celebrated in this nomination. Nick, Charlie and Andy each bring their own special talents and skills to keep things running smoothly, and each has been essential in helping us build a reputation for friendly service, excellent local knowledge and delicious home cooked meals. This nomination is really for them.

As we look forward to celebrating our decade, we are focussing our efforts on becoming a greener and more sustainable hostel – but more on that later.

When voting, please also consider the Mountain Rescue Team nomination which we are pleased to support.
